Stephen Bates Ph.D, P.Eng

Stephen holds a Ph.D in Engineering from the University of Edinburgh and is a world class expert in performance storage, non-volatile memory, computer networking, signal processing and error correction coding. As a former Professor at the University of Alberta in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering’s ICORE High Capacity Digital Communications Lab, Stephen was awarded an NSERC Discovery Grant and an SRC Research Grant to investigate bridging the domain between algorithm development and silicon implementation.
Stephen has been instrumental in solving some of the most complicated communication and storage solutions in the industry. His entrepreneurship has seen him direct and found several technology companies. He was Senior Technical Director at Microsemi (formerly PMC), where he worked to shape and execute on Microsemi’s roadmap for high-performance storage. He was cofounder and Chief Architect of Rad3 Communications, a communications IP provider which was acquired by PMC Sierra in 2011. In addition, in 2005 he founded Raithlin Semiconductor to deliver consulting, design services and IP solutions in the areas of Ethernet, mobile-TV, bioinformatics and home networking.
Stephen lives in Canmore with his family and is an avid outdoor enthusiast with a particular passion for mountain biking.
